In this essay I will be discussing whether my radio drama was successful and if it turned out the way I intended it to.

I personally think my radio drama was successful in for filling its purpose, to create a story through using foley sounds and voice actors. The best aspect of the drama in my opinion was the decision to use a narration for most of the acting, this is because I felt that the story was better told from one person’s point of view and gave me the ability to make the story more interesting and interest; I did also use other voice actors at different points of the story to incorporate conversations into the narrative. However, there were a few aspects that need improving to make the drama of a high standard, for example, I didn’t have time to create any foley sounds such as footsteps or the sound of a phone sending a message which meant I didn’t reach a part of the criteria for this project and hopefully it’s something I can improve on next time.

Furthermore, another stage which I think needs a lot more improving is the planning stage. Due to my poor time management I didn’t allow myself to conduct enough planning to meet the criteria, this could’ve affected my overall mark and the final outcome of the radio drama. If I were to redo this project, I would make sure that I manage my time better so I have an equal amount of time for every stage enabling me to finish the project to the best of my ability. As I didn’t have a very detailed plan, I missed out certain things that could’ve improved my drama massively, for example, I didn’t add the expression marks to my script, this effected the performance of my voice actors as they didn’t know what tone of voice they needed to say their lines, or if they needed to be further away from the microphone to indicate to the audience that the character is far away. Not doing this perhaps made my radio drama seems less realistic which meant it was less enjoyable for the audience to listen to.

As said in the paragraph above my time management wasn’t well thought out as I think I spent too much time on certain stages of the project and left the actual production phase too close to the deadline. For example, I spent a lot of time during this project creating a script in detail as I wanted to make the best story possible for the drama which meant I wasn’t concentrating on how I was going to make non-diegetic sounds. During this project I had the opportunity to work with three other people (the voice actors) I somewhat think we worked well together, for example, they were able to record all their dialogue in a short amount of time; as I instructed. However, I think I could’ve given them more guidance as to how I wanted them to say certain things, this is because some of their lines when I listened back to them weren’t in the correct tone I needed to make the story need believable. Although my time management wasn’t too good, I think I handled each stage well and got them all done in time for the deadline, although some stages such as, the research need a lot more detail in order to get a high grade. Furthermore, two of the most important stages, pre-production and production, were also completed to only a satisfactory standard and could’ve done with more time put into them to ensure they were completed to the best of my ability.

From doing this project I have learnt a lot of new knowledge. For example, before during this project I didn’t know what a radio drama was but now I am confident in knowing exactly what one is and how to produce one. As well as this, I’ve learnt all about sound and how it can be used to bring a story to life, an example of this is, you can hit boots on a pavement to create the sound of footsteps. Furthermore, before editing the radio drama I didn’t know how to use audition or how to record sound in the sound booth but now I’ve learnt how I can use them, this will be extremely helpful during future project if I’m doing anything all sound; even just editing background music to set the right tone or mood.

In conclusion, I think that my final piece was somewhat successful in for filling its purpose but still requires a lot of improvements. From doing this project I’ve learnt a lot of new skills and knowledge that I hope to use in future and assignments and work. Also, I have been able to critically identify my strengths and weakness throughout this essay which shows that I know where to improvement for the next time we do something like this.
